Trade Justice

The Trade Justice Movement is a fast growing group of organisations including trade unions, aid agencies, environment and human rights campaigns, fairtrade organisations, faith and consumer groups.

We believe that everyone has the right to feed their families, make a decent living and protect their environment. But the rich and powerful are pursuing trade policies that put profits before the needs of people and the planet. To end poverty and protect the environment we need Trade Justice not free trade.

As part of our support for Trade Justice, Alma runs a fairtade stall two Sundays a month.

Christian Solidarity

We are glad to live in a country where there is no persecution because of our religious beliefs. Many others around the world are not as fortunate though, we believe we should attempt to stand with them and highlight their plight. See Christian Solidarity Worldwide and the Barnabus Fund for more details and up-to-date information.

Slave Trade

2007 is the bi-centenary of the passing of the Slave Trade Act in the UK which prohibited British vessels engaging in the slave trade. So, 200 years on, is it all ok now, surely that is just history?
Recent dates and events:

  • 1999 Togo and Benin pass legislation on trafficking children
  • 2000 Mali and Cote d'Ivoire sign child trafficking treaty
  • 2001 An Etireno ship carries child slaves from Benin, Mali and Togo to work in Gabon catching press attention

People trafficking and bonded labour - it is still taking place in 2007. See Anti-slavery International, Emmaus against human trafficking or Stop the traffic (Justice for Children International) for more information.
